Blogs, Germs, and Steel

"Even before the arrival of white colonists, Africa already harbored not just blacks but (as we shall see) five of the world's six major divisions of humanity, and three of them are confined as natives to Africa. One-quarter of the world's languages are spoken only in Africa. No other continent approaches this human diversity." - Jared Diamond, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies

I stayed up late last night and (none / 0)

watched about 20 YouTube videos of his routines. George Carlin was as sharp as ever up until he died at 71(RIP my favorite comedian of all time).

Carlin had just been announced as the recipient of the Mark Twain award for comedy.  Really one of the giants.

I hadn't heard about George Carlin dying (none / 0)

My brother took me to see his show in Des Moines something like 25 years ago. I remember him making a joke along the lines of, "I'm ahead of Richard Pryor in heart attacks 2-1, but he's ahead of me in burning yourself up 1-0."

I can't believe George Carlin is dead... (none / 0)

One of my favorites. Had to call my mother about that -- I think it depressed her. He was her favorite comedian ever.

Take it easy, George (2.00 / 1)

Carlin would say that Mars is a little too far to go to put ice in your beer cooler.  Except funnier.  And with lots of swearing.

To change the subject. Is Mugabe worse than Ian Smith. Interesting question. It had to end of course but you can't help asking yourself if all these little tinpot, crooked, murderous, light fingered dictators like Mugabe are an improvement for the the average Joe Sixpack over the colonialists.

Prisons and immigration: wording revision, please! (none / 0)

Immigration is the third commonest offense in US jails

No, it's the third most common offense in Federal prisons and jails.  But over 90% of prisoners in the U.S. are in state and local prisons and jails, not in Federal prisons.

Not only should 'Federal' be substituted for 'US' in the post, but you need to say that Federal prisons are less than 10% of the whole, and an unrepresentative 10% at that.
